Every “yes” we give to one thing is also a “no” to something else. Embracing responsibility isn’t about guilt—it’s about empowerment. <h3>What Does It Really Mean to Be a Person-Centered Counsellor?</h3><p>When I scroll through counsellor profiles on <a data-mce-href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/therapists/dr-ben-garrett-chilliwack-bc/272095" href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/therapists/dr-ben-garrett-chilliwack-bc/272095">Psychology Today</a>, I notice that countless practitioners describe themselves as “person-centered.” But what does that actually mean? And more importantly—how does someone become a person-centered counsellor?</p><p>After seeing hundreds of people make this claim, I got curious. I searched for Canadian training programs in Person-Centered Counselling and, to my surprise, found virtually nothing.</p><p>Here’s the reality: in most provinces across Canada, anyone can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist—even without a single hour of formal training. That’s why it’s so important to check the credentials of any counsellor you’re considering working with. By contrast, the UK takes a very different approach. Terms like “person-centered counsellor” are protected there, and professionals have to prove they’ve had the training and supervision to earn that title.</p><p>In Canada, before we can talk about protecting specialized titles like “person-centered counsellor,” we first need to <a data-mce-href="https://www.ccpa-accp.ca/british-columbia-regulation/" href="https://www.ccpa-accp.ca/british-columbia-regulation/">protect the broader professional titles of “counsellor” and “psychotherapist.”</a></p><h3>A Legacy Without a Roadmap</h3><p>Person-Centered Counselling was developed by <a data-mce-href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Rogers" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Rogers">Carl Rogers</a>. Unfortunately, Rogers never left us with a clear training pathway for becoming a person-centered counsellor. What we do know, however, is that his approach is considered one of the most challenging to truly master—even for those who have completed training.</p><h3>Rogers outlined what he called the “necessary and sufficient conditions for constructive personality change”:</h3><p>Two persons are in psychological contact.<br>The first, whom we shall term the client, is in a state of incongruence, being vulnerable and anxious.<br>The second person, whom we shall term the therapist, is congruent or integrated in the relationship.<br>The therapist experiences unconditional positive regard for the client.<br>The therapist experiences an empathetic understanding of the client’s internal frame of reference and endeavours to communicate this experience to the client.<br>The communication to the client of the therapist’s empathetic understanding and unconditional positive regard is to a minimal degree achieved.<br></p><h3>More Than Just Words</h3><p>On paper, these conditions sound simple enough. But for person-centered counsellors, the depth of each idea—“<a data-mce-href="https://counsellingtutor.com/counselling-approaches/person-centred-approach-to-counselling/carl-rogers-core-conditions/" href="https://counsellingtutor.com/counselling-approaches/person-centred-approach-to-counselling/carl-rogers-core-conditions/">psychological contact</a>,” “unconditional positive regard,” “empathy”—goes far beyond nodding in agreement with them.</p><p>I can hardly imagine a good counsellor who wouldn’t believe in these principles. Yet belief alone isn’t the point. The real challenge lies in embodying them. It’s like when a partner says, “I don’t want you to tell me that you love me. I want you to show me that you love me.”</p><p>In the same way, unconditional positive regard and empathy must be shown and experienced—not just talked about. And the best way for counsellors to grasp this depth is often through their <a data-mce-href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/counselling-for-counsellors" href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/counselling-for-counsellors">own personal counselling</a> and <a data-mce-href="https://veddercounselling.ca/supervision-sessions" href="https://veddercounselling.ca/supervision-sessions">clinical supervision</a>. Without proper training—or trained supervisors in person-centered work—how can a counsellor truly know what these concepts mean?</p><h3>Where I Stand</h3><p>My own background is in <a data-mce-href="https://www.emmyvandeurzen.com/existential-therapy" href="https://www.emmyvandeurzen.com/existential-therapy">existential therapy</a>, which often overlaps with person-centered ideas. For clarity’s sake, I usually describe myself as person-centered because most people do not know what existential therapy is and it can be a confusing term for clients. After all, if pages upon pages of counsellors in Canada are claiming that title, I feel comfortable identifying with it too—while also recognizing the importance of deep training and lived experience in making it more than just a label. I also see that counsellors say they are an existential therapist but when I speak with them, I only find out that they read a book on existential therapy when I know that there needs to be much more of an experience to understand what that means. Through my 15 years of training, clinical supervision and experience, I am truly an existential therapist.&nbsp;</p>

Person Centered Counsellor Training

<h3>More Than Textbook Knowledge</h3><p>Counselling and supervision are never just about learning the right tools or following the right steps following from a book or a weekend training. At its heart, therapy is about what happens between two people. That relationship—the trust, the uncertainty, the mystery—is where real change begins.&nbsp;</p><p>When we reduce counselling to a set of techniques, the counsellor risks becoming more of a technician than a human being. Skills are important, of course, but they must be alive and responsive to the person sitting in front of us. As one writer put it, “theory itself that is not firmly rooted in the primacy of what is happening between two people can be a source of danger.” If we are not firmly grounded in what it is like to be a client, we are at risk for causing some damage.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why Counsellors Need Counselling</h3><p>This is why it’s essential for counsellors and supervisors to have counselling themselves. It’s not only about personal growth or self-care—it’s about staying grounded in what it feels like to be on the other side of the room.&nbsp;</p><p>This experience of personal counselling and clinical supervision is important so that psychotherapy and counselling will not, like much of psychiatry and psychology, lose its origins, in starting with the meeting between two people.</p><p>When we’ve sat in the client’s chair, we remember the vulnerability of sharing our story. We notice our own blind spots and the ways we might unknowingly restrict others. And we gain a kind of wisdom that can’t be taught in a classroom or a textbook—it can only be lived. This is a tacit knowledge that only comes from experience.&nbsp;</p><h3>Staying Human in the Work</h3><p>Counselling is most powerful when it begins with two people meeting honestly and openly. Theories and techniques can support us, but they are never the main event. What matters most is our willingness to stay present, curious, and real.</p><p>Doing our own counselling is one of the best ways to keep that human connection alive. It reminds us that we are not just helpers—we are also fellow travelers. And that shared humanity may be the most healing thing we bring into the room.</p>

Wampold, a researcher and psychologist, argues that we’ve been looking at therapy through the wrong lens for far too long. The big takeaway? It’s not about which type of therapy you get—it’s about who your therapist is, how willing you are to the process and how the relationship unfolds.</p><h3>The Two Models: Medical vs. Contextual</h3><p><br>Wampold starts by breaking down two competing models of how psychotherapy is supposed to work.</p><p>First, there’s the <a data-mce-href="https://www.verywellmind.com/medical-model-2671617" href="https://www.verywellmind.com/medical-model-2671617">medical model</a>. This is the traditional approach, where each mental health issue is treated like a disease that requires a specific remedy. Depression? Try <a data-mce-href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/cognitive-behavioral-therapy/about/pac-20384610" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/cognitive-behavioral-therapy/about/pac-20384610">Cognitive Behavioral Therapy</a>. Trauma? <a data-mce-href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/22641-emdr-therapy" href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/22641-emdr-therapy">Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)</a>. Anxiety? Maybe <a data-mce-href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/consumer-health/in-depth/mindfulness-exercises/art-20046356" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/consumer-health/in-depth/mindfulness-exercises/art-20046356">mindfulness</a>. The idea is that particular methods work for particular problems.</p><p>But Wampold challenges this idea with what he calls the contextual model. In this model, therapy isn’t about matching disorders to techniques. It’s about the context in which healing happens—especially the connection between client and therapist, the client’s belief in the process, and the meaningful rituals that make therapy feel real and purposeful.</p><h3>Common Factors: The Real Engine of Change</h3><p><br>Wampold presents a mountain of evidence showing that different types of therapy are equally effective—as long as they’re delivered by competent therapists. In other words, CBT doesn’t "win" over psychodynamic therapy. Nor does one modality outperform the others across the board.</p><p>Why not?</p><p>Because what actually leads to change in therapy are common factors—the elements that exist across all approaches. These include:</p><p>A strong therapeutic relationship<br>Hope and expectations for improvement<br>A structured and meaningful process<br>It turns out that when people believe therapy will help, and when they feel heard, valued, and supported by their therapist, they get better—regardless of what theoretical model is used.</p><h3>Therapist Matters More Than Therapy Type</h3><p><br>Another fascinating finding Wampold highlights is that therapist effects are often stronger than treatment effects. That means some therapists consistently get better results than others, no matter what kind of therapy they’re doing. It’s not the technique that makes the biggest difference—it’s the therapist’s ability to build rapport, instill hope, and tailor the process to the person in front of them.</p><p>He also notes the impact of allegiance effects—therapists do better with the approaches they believe in. This reinforces the idea that belief, confidence, and meaning-making are central to the process.</p><h3>What This Means for Clients (and Therapists)</h3><p><br>If you’re thinking about therapy, here’s the good news: you don’t need to find the “perfect” type of therapy. Instead, focus on finding a therapist you connect with, someone who makes you feel safe, understood, and optimistic about change.&nbsp;</p><p>And if you’re a therapist, especially in training or supervision, this book is a reminder to prioritize relational skills, empathy, and presence. Techniques matter—but they matter most when wrapped in genuine connection.</p><h3>Final Thought</h3><p><br>The Great Psychotherapy Debate doesn’t say techniques are useless. Far from it. It says they’re part of a larger healing process that depends more on human connection, belief, and meaning than on rigid protocols.</p><p>In a time when mental health is more essential than ever, Wampold’s work reminds us that what heals us isn’t just science—it’s <a data-mce-href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/compassion-matters/201612/the-importance-of-the-relationship-in-therapy" href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/compassion-matters/201612/the-importance-of-the-relationship-in-therapy">relationship</a>. And in the therapy room, that may be the most powerful medicine of all.</p>

Why Therapy Works: It’s Not Just the Technique – It’s the Relationship

<h2>The Need for Affordable Counselling</h2><p>Mental health has become more of a <a data-mce-href="https://ottawa.cmha.ca/the-state-of-mental-health-in-canada-2024/" href="https://ottawa.cmha.ca/the-state-of-mental-health-in-canada-2024/">priority in recent years</a>, and that’s a good thing. But the reality is, for a lot of people, counselling still feels out of reach. Whether it’s the cost, the long waitlists, or simply not knowing where to start, many are left feeling like support isn’t available to them unless they can afford to pay private rates. That’s a problem.</p><p>I’ve been thinking about this for years. When I was a teenager, I went to counselling for the first time. I remember really wanting to talk—like really talk—about the things that were happening in my life. But instead, the counsellor had me go through a full family history during our first session. I get it now—sometimes that kind of structured intake is helpful, especially if a client doesn’t know where to begin. But at the time, I didn’t feel heard. <a data-mce-href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/the-joy-of-talking-about-whatever-you-want-in-counselling" href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/the-joy-of-talking-about-whatever-you-want-in-counselling">What I really needed was space to share my story. </a>That moment has stuck with me ever since.</p><p>It planted a seed. I always wanted to make counselling more accessible—especially for those who are struggling emotionally and financially. That’s what originally drew me to government and nonprofit work. I had this hope that if we could offer affordable, good-quality counselling through these systems, it could make a real difference. But as time went on, I found it harder and harder to work within systems that weren’t built to support that kind of flexibility and presence that I think therapy really needs.</p><p>So I shifted. I started offering affordable counselling through my interns, and it’s something I take very seriously. I teach them to meet people where they’re at. Some clients come in ready to talk. Others don’t know where to begin. We cater therapy to what the client needs, not the other way around. It’s our way of keeping that door open for people who might not otherwise walk through it.</p><p>There are other barriers, too. Stigma still plays a role. Some people worry about what it means to ask for help. Others simply don’t know that affordable counselling exists. And when you finally do build up the courage to reach out, only to be met with a six-month waitlist or fees you can’t afford—it’s easy to give up. That’s why I believe so strongly in creating clear, reachable paths to support. We need to make it easier, not harder, for people to get help.</p><p>Affordable counselling doesn’t just help individuals—it supports families, workplaces, and whole communities. When people can access support early on, it prevents larger crises down the road. It also helps people stay on their feet financially. Nobody should have to choose between paying for groceries and getting the mental health support they need.</p><p>There are some great ways to access affordable counselling:</p><p>- Community mental health centres<br>- Nonprofit organizations<br>- University counselling programs (often with interns)<br>- Online therapy platforms</p><h3>The Role of Online Therapy</h3><p>Online therapy in particular has opened up new possibilities. It’s flexible, it’s more affordable in many cases, and it can take some of the pressure off—especially for those who feel nervous about walking into a counselling office.
