That relationship—the trust, the uncertainty, the mystery—is where real change begins.&nbsp;</p><p>When we reduce counselling to a set of techniques, the counsellor risks becoming more of a technician than a human being. Skills are important, of course, but they must be alive and responsive to the person sitting in front of us. As one writer put it, “theory itself that is not firmly rooted in the primacy of what is happening between two people can be a source of danger.” If we are not firmly grounded in what it is like to be a client, we are at risk for causing some damage.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why Counsellors Need Counselling</h3><p>This is why it’s essential for counsellors and supervisors to have counselling themselves. It’s not only about personal growth or self-care—it’s about staying grounded in what it feels like to be on the other side of the room.&nbsp;</p><p>This experience of personal counselling and clinical supervision is important so that psychotherapy and counselling will not, like much of psychiatry and psychology, lose its origins, in starting with the meeting between two people.</p><p>When we’ve sat in the client’s chair, we remember the vulnerability of sharing our story. We notice our own blind spots and the ways we might unknowingly restrict others. And we gain a kind of wisdom that can’t be taught in a classroom or a textbook—it can only be lived. This is a tacit knowledge that only comes from experience.&nbsp;</p><h3>Staying Human in the Work</h3><p>Counselling is most powerful when it begins with two people meeting honestly and openly. Why Therapy Works: It’s Not Just the Technique – It’s the Relationship

But the reality is, for a lot of people, counselling still feels out of reach. Whether it’s the cost, the long waitlists, or simply not knowing where to start, many are left feeling like support isn’t available to them unless they can afford to pay private rates. That’s a problem.</p><p>I’ve been thinking about this for years. When I was a teenager, I went to counselling for the first time. I remember really wanting to talk—like really talk—about the things that were happening in my life. But instead, the counsellor had me go through a full family history during our first session. I get it now—sometimes that kind of structured intake is helpful, especially if a client doesn’t know where to begin. But at the time, I didn’t feel heard. <a data-mce-href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/the-joy-of-talking-about-whatever-you-want-in-counselling" href="https://veddercounselling.ca/blog/the-joy-of-talking-about-whatever-you-want-in-counselling">What I really needed was space to share my story. </a>That moment has stuck with me ever since.</p><p>It planted a seed. I always wanted to make counselling more accessible—especially for those who are struggling emotionally and financially. That’s what originally drew me to government and nonprofit work. I had this hope that if we could offer affordable, good-quality counselling through these systems, it could make a real difference. But as time went on, I found it harder and harder to work within systems that weren’t built to support that kind of flexibility and presence that I think therapy really needs.</p><p>So I shifted. I started offering affordable counselling through my interns, and it’s something I take very seriously. I teach them to meet people where they’re at. Some clients come in ready to talk. Others don’t know where to begin. We cater therapy to what the client needs, not the other way around. It’s our way of keeping that door open for people who might not otherwise walk through it.</p><p>There are other barriers, too. Stigma still plays a role. Some people worry about what it means to ask for help. Others simply don’t know that affordable counselling exists. And when you finally do build up the courage to reach out, only to be met with a six-month waitlist or fees you can’t afford—it’s easy to give up. That’s why I believe so strongly in creating clear, reachable paths to support. We need to make it easier, not harder, for people to get help.</p><p>Affordable counselling doesn’t just help individuals—it supports families, workplaces, and whole communities. When people can access support early on, it prevents larger crises down the road. It also helps people stay on their feet financially. <p>One of the first things I talk about when I start working with someone in counselling is confidentiality. It’s not just a box we check or a form we sign—it’s actually the thing that allows the rest of the work to happen.</p><p>When people know that what they say stays in the room, something shifts. You can see it in their body language. You can hear it in their voice. That guarded, polite version of themselves starts to fall away, and they begin to talk about what’s really going on. Not just the surface-level stuff, but the fears they carry, the guilt they don’t know what to do with, the things they’ve never said out loud before.</p><p>And it’s not always big, dramatic stories. Sometimes it’s just the quiet truth of being tired. Of feeling lost. Of not knowing who you are anymore. The kind of stuff that’s hard to say even to the people closest to you. But in therapy, when you know that your words are safe, those things finally get a voice.</p><p>Counselling is meant to be a different kind of conversation. And because it’s different, different things come up. That’s the beauty of it. When you’re not worried about being judged or hurting someone’s feelings or having it used against you later, you can actually think out loud. You can explore. And that’s where change starts—right there in the safety of being heard.</p><p>Confidentiality gives people the freedom to slow down and look at their lives honestly. To connect the dots. To notice the patterns. And to make sense of things in a way they maybe never have before. As a therapist, I don’t take that lightly. It’s an ethical and legal responsibility, yes—but it’s also a human one. The trust that people place in me matters. If someone is at risk of harm—whether to themselves or someone else—there are situations where confidentiality may need to be broken in order to keep people safe. I always make sure people know that from the beginning. No surprises. Just clarity and care.</p><p>But outside of those exceptions, the room is yours. And that privacy? It’s not just comforting. It’s powerful. Because when people feel truly safe, they stop performing. They start being honest. And from that place, real work can happen.</p><p>Over time, I’ve seen how that trust doesn’t just stay in the therapy room—it starts to ripple outward. People begin to trust themselves more. They take what they’ve learned into their relationships, their parenting, their work. They start setting boundaries, speaking up, being more themselves. And that, to me, is where the real impact of confidentiality shows up. In the way it makes space for someone to grow into who they are.</p><p>So yes—confidentiality matters. It’s not just about privacy. It’s about giving people the space to be real. And when that happens, change follows.</p>
